Abstract
L’arrivée au pouvoir de Maurice Duplessis a été perçue par les contemporains comme un renouveau de l’alliance entre l’Église catholique et l’État québécois, mettant fin à la guerre froide qui opposait ces deux pouvoirs sous la gouverne libérale de Louis-Alexandre Taschereau. Privés d’accès au riche contenu des archives religieuses, les historiens ont reproduit cette perception. En utilisant les archives inédites du cardinal Villeneuve, l’auteur propose un regard nouveau sur les relations entre l’Église et l’État, qui étaient en fait moins harmonieuses sous Duplessis qu’elles ne l’avaient été sous Taschereau.
