Abstract
Ce n'est pas une mince entreprise que de tenter de reconstituer la genèse du réseau urbain du Québec. Aux difficultés qui découlent de l'insuffisance des connaissances sur l'histoire économique et sociale s'ajoutent, en effet, celles que poserait la présentation des documents statistiques et cartographiques nécessaires pour une analyse approfondie du sujet. Nous avons donc renoncé à présenter un véritable essai d'interprétation géographique du réseau urbain québécois, difficile à imaginer sans recours aux méthodes quantitatives et sans référence aux schémas théoriques utilisés ailleurs dans l'analyse des réseaux urbains. Laissant de côté plusieurs questions importantes, comme l'évolution du rôle des villes dans l'organisation de l'espace géographique québécois ou les transformations dans les structures des espaces urbanisés, nous nous limiterons à présenter un tableau général de l'évolution des effectifs urbains, des fonctions des villes et de leur répartition.
