Abstract
Cet article veut jeter un regard critique sur le débat entourant la question de la présence de la religion à l'école. Dans un premier temps, il veut montrer comment ce débat s'est noué au Québec de 1963 à aujourd'hui. Les illustrations retenues permettent de voir comment les instances catholiques ont exercé un rôle prépondérant et ont contribué à maintenir des rapports ambigus entre les Églises et l'État en matière de religion à l'école. Dans un deuxième temps, le texte propose quelques considérations afin de resituer le débat par rapport à la mission fondamentale de l'école dans une société démocratique.
