Abstract
En tant que mouvement nationaliste régional, le nationalisme flamand s’est positionné à la droite de l’échiquier politique belge. Le but de cet article est d’expliquer ce phénomène par l’analyse des moments-clés à l’origine du système politique moderne de la Belgique. La thèse défendue par l’auteur veut que les alliances forgées au moment de l’expansion du suffrage aient placé l’histoire politique belge sur une voie spécifique. La configuration du paysage politique à cette époque a marqué un point tournant dans le développement du futur mouvement nationaliste flamand. L’Église catholique a profité des divisions linguistiques afin de combattre l’alliance anticléricale francophone formée des libéraux et des socialistes ; ceci a permis au nationalisme de devenir une carte maîtresse dans le clivage entre catholiques et laïcs qui a marqué le débat politique belge.
