Abstract
Les théories du rythme en poésie contemporaine mettent en lumière la construction formelle du Passage de l’Indiana de Normand Chaurette. Structurée à la manière d’une partition musicale, la pièce fonctionne selon un système de répétitions qui instaure une temporalité favorisant les retours. En repérant et en comparant des unités signifiantes (répliques, thèmes et motifs) qui sont répétées dans la pièce, il appert que le sens de ces unités se transforme selon l’endroit où elles se situent. L’intrigue qui paraît, de premier abord, fragmentée et stagnante en raison des multiples répétitions progresse, au contraire, grâce aux déplacements de sens qu’implique la reproduction. Ces déplacements se vérifient également chez les personnages : chacun répète les répliques des autres personnages et leur attribue un sens nouveau en jouant un autre rôle. Grâce au jeu dans le jeu, l’identité des personnages est mouvante.
