The Editor as Gap-Filler: The Letters of Margaret Laurence and Adele Wiseman
Bibliographic record
Abstract
Ruth Panofsky, co-editor with John Lennox of Selected Letters of Margaret Laurence and Adele Wiseman (University of Toronto Press 1997), discusses the editorial problems that arise during the course of compiling collections of correspondence. Panofsky acknowledges Robert Stephen Becker's distinction between editorial approaches that ascribe to the manuscripts either complete textual authority or varying interpretations (‘The Sacred Text’ versus ‘The Sensible Text’). It is the job of the editor, argues Panofsky, to present as complete a sense of her or his subject as possible. If there are gaps in the archival records, such as the limited extant letters of Wiseman, it is up to the editor to balance the records through careful scholarly research and editing. The intended market for the book and the reactions of the living relatives of the subject are also considered.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; both teacher heads agree on what is shown here.
