Abstract

La souffrance psychique et la santé mentale semblent être l’un des principaux points de repère de l’individualisation de la condition humaine. Le recours systématique à ces deux expressions signale une récente et profonde transformation de la règle sociale; ce n’est pas parce que les choses semblent plus « personnelles » aujourd’hui qu’elles sont pour autant moins sociales, moins politiques ou moins institutionnelles. Elles le sont autrement, et c’est cet « autrement » qu’on tente de décrire ici. Car nous sommes moins dans un contexte d’affaiblissement que de transformation de la règle. Les notions de souffrance psychique et de santé mentale vont de pair avec l’exigence d’autonomie, de capacité de décision et d’action de l’individu. Je tenterai de montrer comment le fait de justifier nos manières d’être et nos manières de faire dans les termes de l’autonomie est l’élément conduisant à redécrire de multiples problèmes en termes de souffrance psychique et de santé mentale, à adopter un langage de la vulnérabilité individuelle de masse.
