Abstract
Millions of people today in Quebec, and also the rest of Canada and the United States where French-Canadians migrated, have 17th and 18th century French colonists among their ancestors. Relying on parish registers which date back to the very first settlements, genealogists established a long time ago that some 10 000 French men and women are responsible for this stock. But their contributions are very heterogeneous as 35 % of them have no descendants living today, narrowing the number of founders to 6 000 individuals, of which 1 600 were women. On the other hand, a few hundred, having arrived early and reproduced abundantly, number millions of descendants. The Normandy, Poitou and Aunis regions of France thus have an actual importance which is far greater than their numbers in the total immigration. And as 60 % of immigrants left no descendants through their sons, French-Canadians include a remarkably small variety of family names.
