Longtemps sous-estimes au profit des flux de marchandises, les Investissements Directs Étrangers (IDE) finissent par imposer leur poids en cette fin du XXe siècle et apparaissent déjà au rang des facteurs qui vont peser le plus sur les transformations structurelles du jeu de l'économie mondiale au cours du XXIe siècle. L'analyse économique propose des grilles d'analyse qui permettent de comprendre en partie les stimuli à l'origine des flux et les déterminants de leur localisation. En revanche, le repérage statistique de ces flux et l'identification des rapports entre les formes anciennes et les formes nouvelles d'investissement (accords de technologie, d'assistance, de sous-traitance, de gestion, etc.) restent encore insatisfaisants. Les prospectives sur les effets de la croissance des IDE au cours des deux prochaines décennies apparaissent très contradictoires entre celles qui prédisent l'accroissement de l'instabilité du système financier international du fait d'une privatisation grâce à l'apport des capitaux aux zones les moins développées et celles, enfin, en apparence plus saugrenues, qui prédisent une raréfaction des capitaux dont les principales victimes seraient les régions en développement.
