Abstract
Les textes autobiographiques de Guèvremont font une large place à sa mère, Valentine Labelle, et aux relations mère-fille. Ces textes sont de plus fascinants pour la façon dont s’y lit, en clair-obscur, l’ombre qui tomba, dès avant sa naissance, sur leur relation, car une tierce figure apparaît en filigrane : celle d’une autre Germaine, la soeur aînée de la romancière décédée en bas âge. Yvan Lepage a découvert l’existence de cette « première » Germaine Guèvremont et une recherche à la Société de généalogie des Laurentides permet de confirmer que celle-ci, baptisée le 11 décembre 1891 sous le nom de Marie Germaine Éliane, est née le 9 décembre 1891 et décédée le 15 août 1892, à l’âge de huit mois et sept jours. Née huit mois après ce décès, la romancière, baptisée du prénom de Marianne Germaine Grignon, fut donc un « enfant de remplacement ». Cet article analyse les rapports mère-fille dans les fragments autobiographiques de Guèvremont et dans ses oeuvres de fiction, en montrant que ceux-ci sont marqués par la problématique de l’enfant de remplacement.
