Numerical Investigation on the Transport in a PEMFC using a Microstructure Reconstruction Technique

Abstract
The relationship between predicted cell performance and the microstructures of the porous components such as the gas diffusion layer (GDL) and catalyst layer (CL) is a challenge for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) modelling. In this study, the GDL and CL are reconstructed based on complicated structure generated software GeoDict. The effective transport properties are then derived from reconstructed structures. By incorporating the thus obtained effective transport properties, a two-dimensional, two-phase cathode model is developed to predict the cathodic polarization curve. This study offers a way to correlate microstructures of the GDL and the CL with cell performance.
