Abstract
The recent acceleration in the study of play is perhaps related to the rediscovery of how a phenomenon once thought to be trivial and irrelevant can play a major role in development. This issue is addressed in various chapters of a recently published book, Children’s play: Current Theory and Research edited by D.J. Pepler and K.H. Rubin. In this book, the authors review the theoretical bases for the role of play in development and examine the definitional and methodological problems that plague contemporary play research. In addition, the developmental nature of play and the relations between different forms of play (e.g., fantasy activity) and indices of developmental competence (e.g., problem-solving) are considered. Finally, the effects of the ecological setting on children’s play are examined.
