L’article vise à explorer la nature des rapports entre garçons dans les collèges classiques entre 1870 et 1960 à partir des archives institutionnelles, de lettres et de journaux intimes, de publications diverses et des témoignages d’anciens élèves. Il montre que les rapports entre hommes s’y construisent dans un espace trouble où l’obsession pour la maîtrise des pulsions et la peur de l’homosexualité brident la camaraderie et la sensibilité que valorisent, par ailleurs, certains aspects de l’enseignement humaniste. Cette tension entre des valeurs concurrentes est particulièrement visible entre 1930 et 1960 tandis que s’accentue la condamnation des amitiés particulières. Pendant cette période tout particulièrement, l’influence des pairs impose une pression en faveur d’une performance virile où le féminin, genre inférieur, sert de repoussoir.
