Le spectacle vivant est objet d’histoire depuis quelques décennies. Toutefois, les travaux révèlent une connaissance sommaire du travail quotidien des artistes de la scène, faute de sources disponibles. Les archives judiciaires viennent au secours du chercheur et lui livrent des données abondantes sur la gestion technico-artistique d’une entreprise théâtrale au Québec, de la fin du XIXe siècle à la veille de la Grande Guerre. Les témoignages et les pièces versées aux dossiers permettent de reconstituer les contrats de travail, d’examiner les conflits que leur application engendre et d’exposer en complément d’information la naissance de mouvements associatifs et l’adoption de modestes mesures protectrices.
