Abstract
L’ouverture des hostilités en août 1914 met un terme à une période de renouveau culturel en Alsace et en Lorraine ; elle rebat également les cartes en matière de politiques patrimoniales, par les incertitudes qu’elle suscite quant à l’avenir des provinces annexées. Dès 1915, des commissions chargées d’étudier à Paris ce que serait l’Alsace française préconisent d’introduire en Alsace et en Lorraine la législation française en matière de protection du patrimoine, tout en respectant les spécificités alsaciennes. Au lendemain de l’armistice, le ministère des Beaux-Arts envoie dans les départements de l’Est une équipe d’architectes autour de Robert Danis ainsi qu’un archiviste, avec pour mission de constituer une direction régionale des Beaux-Arts, d’apporter des solutions aux problèmes nés de la guerre et de relancer l’activité des services patrimoniaux.
