Cet article présente une synthèse des travaux sur la modélisation du comportement des ménages dans un contexte de marchés imparfaits. Les travaux théoriques ouvrent de nouvelles perspectives sur l’interprétation de comportements apparemment peu économiques des paysans et sur les instruments de politique économique à mobiliser pour le développement rural et la lutte contre la pauvreté. Les analyses empiriques, et notamment la mesure de la capacité d’ajustement des paysans aux imperfections de marché et du coût de ces ajustements, se sont par contre heurtées à des difficultés considérables de disponibilité de données et de développement des méthodes. Des progrès récents sur ces deux fronts ouvrent des portes prometteuses pour poursuivre ces efforts.
