Gabrielle Roy a laissé un nombre considérable de manuscrits et d’inédits, dont la lecture est susceptible de jeter un éclairage nouveau sur certains de ses textes canoniques. C’est le cas du court texte autobiographique « Mes études à Saint-Boniface », dont la structure et l’essentiel du propos sont repris dans La détresse et l’enchantement . Or le message livré par l’une et l’autre de ces versions du récit de la visite de l’inspecteur n’est pas du tout le même. Nous proposons ici une analyse du travail de réécriture qui s’est opéré entre les différentes versions du récit. C’est finalement une interrogation sur l’essence même du projet autobiographique de Gabrielle Roy qui naît de l’étude de ce dossier génétique.
