Abstract
Les études sur le Québec ont longtemps été marquées par des dichotomies qui ont dissocié à l'échelle du territoire vécu des réalités qui évoluaient souvent en association étroite avec d'autres. À ces voies parallèles de recherche fondées sur l'opposition entre sociétés traditionnelles et sociétés modernes, il faudrait pouvoir substituer une préoccupation plus relationnelle, favorisant une vision plus unifiée du réel. Ce texte se veut un pas en ce sens: revenant sur la définition première de tradition et de modernité, il en recherche les significations spatiales pour montrer quelles formes en dérivent dans l'espace et comment celles-ci se conjuguent entre elles. Appliquée au XIXe siècle québécois, la démarche fait ressortir le contexte de complémentarités dans lequel la société rurale a évolué et précise les paramètres spatiaux de son observation. Elle suggère également des moyens de mieux intégrer les faits de permanence et de changement.
