Abstract
"The Vimy Memorial by Walter Seymour Allward (1925-1936), or sculpture supporting commemoration", by Karine Pietrzak. The Canadian commemorative monument in Vimy in the Pas-de-Calais (northern France) was erected by the Canadian architect and sculptor Walter Seymour Allward from 1925 to 1936. When he wins the competition held in 1921, Allward designs a true sacred altar in honour of the memory of the 11.285 Canadians who once had given their lives on this hill and whose bodies had never been found. Commissioned by the Canadian government and designed as a defensive wall, the monument is composed of a 75 meters base and of two huge white pylons towering 35 meters above it, giving this structure all its monumentality. At last, the overall pattern is flanked by 20 allegorical figures devoted to the triumph of peace and to the universal virtues shared by France, Great Britain and Canada. Among all the monuments commemorating the Canadian sacrifice, the Vimy Memorial is the noblest one in Europa. It would combine the most modern techniques of XlXth and XXth centuries architecture and sculpture : the use of concrete and steel for the foundations, the aesthetic effect conveyed by a marble-like white limestone, all these elements giving to this monumental architectural grouping an emotional power and a strenght that Italian Renaissance and XlXth century French art used to symbolize. Allward can be linked with the Classical movement by his taste for figurative representations, his quest for expression, but also his use of symmetry, of straight lines, or his arrangement of volumes, that one can notice both in the plan and the elevation. By means of a clear composition, of the lighting effects and of the bruised landscape, the artist combines the current trend towards Classical beauty and the decadent representation of war. From michelangelesque strenght to the materiality of Rodin's bodies to this feeling of harrowing frailty of the modern Expressionism, he succeeded in creating the public masterpiece that was to become the pride of Canadian sculpture.
