Abstract
Dès le début des années 1980, le British Museum a mis en place une politique d’acquisition d’oeuvres contemporaines « du Moyen-Orient ». Les oeuvres acquises sont successivement exposées avec les objets d’art islamique historique du musée réunis dans la galerie John Addis. Ce choix sous-entend que ces oeuvres contemporaines prolongeraient l’« art islamique » aujourd’hui. En revenant sur l’histoire de la galerie John Addis et de ses collections d’art « islamique », historique et contemporain, cet article montre que le choix fait par le British Museum d’exposer sa collection d’« art contemporain du Moyen-Orient » à côté d’objets de l’art islamique historique réactive non seulement la notion de « civilisation islamique » mais suppose également de façon tout aussi problématique l’existence d’une « essence islamique ».
