Abstract
Abstract In an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Children's Hospital science, wisdom and compassion must be interwoven into the fabric of everyday in order for the children and their families to heal and the staff caring for them to remain healthy. The challenge is to practise both the art and science of medicine and to respond to the different cultural and spiritual beliefs of those brought together by a child's illness. This paper summarizes the special needs of parents and children in the ICU, the obstacles and opportunities encountered by staff, and research from Vancouver which helps those who provide holistic and spiritually oriented care.
