Abstract
En mai 1950, Béguin succède à Mounier à la direction d’Esprit et s’attache à promouvoir une littérature qui ne se réduit pas à l’Hexagone. Il évoque à cette fin l’auteur québécois Saint-Denys Garneau en 1953 et 1954. Sa lecture repose sur l’hypothèse du suicide du poète associé à La Relève, une revue ouverte aux courants personnalistes français. Elle témoigne de deux attitudes. D’une part, la métaphore du « monde troué » empruntée à Garneau s’accorde à la vision personnaliste d’un monde fragmenté, en manque d’authenticité, où l’homme se trouve dépossédé, aliéné par l’argent et l’anonymat. D’autre part, le critique suisse s’écarte du programme prescriptif assigné à l’art dans le numéro d’Esprit d’octobre 1934 et semble plus proche du surréalisme sur la question épineuse du suicide. La plasticité du personnalisme permet à Béguin d’en faire un usage non doctrinaire, sans renier ainsi ses affinités surréalistes de jeunesse, et ce d’autant mieux que l’écriture du poète se prête à d’inépuisables interprétations.
