科学技術振興事業団は,研究ネットワークの高度化に関する調査の一環として,平成12年2月29日から3月3日にかけて,カナダのCANARIE,ドイツのDFN,および英国のDANTEの各機関を訪問し,それぞれの機関が運営する研究ネットワークについての調査を行った。カナダでは世界に先駆けて光インターネットのCA*net 3が構築され,欧州においても欧州横断ネットワークのTEN-155が拡充されるなど,ともに米国のInternet 2や次世代インターネットに相当するネットワークインフラの整備が進んでいることが分かった。
