À la différence des autres romans de Jacques Poulin, La tournée d'automne présente, selon toute apparence, une relation amoureuse réussie et un dénouement heureux. Toutefois, une étude approfondie des métaphores du texte, ainsi que de ses non-dits, de ses tensions et de ses impasses, révèle que la relation se voit minée à la fois par un réseau d'images spatiales qui suggèrent la distance plutôt que le rapprochement et par l'ombre de l'inceste, qui la rendent problématique. L'androgynie des personnages est paradoxale dans la mesure où, tout en permettant au protagoniste de vivre la complicité et la tendresse avec l'autre-femme semblable à soi, elle tue le désir sexuel. Le roman offre donc une méditation lucide sur la peur de l'autre et sur la difficulté de reconnaître la différence sexuelle qu'éprouve même l'homme poulinien de bonne volonté.
