Abstract
Cet article présente les principaux résultats d'une étude qualitative portant sur les représentations de la violence psychologique selon le genre. Cette forme subtile de violence conjugale a fait l'objet de quelques études par le passé, principalement quantitatives. Plusieurs chercheurs et chercheures ont en effet tenté de mesurer le concept et d'en dégager l'incidence. Dans le présent article, l'auteure et l'auteur retournent à un niveau de conceptualisation préalable et tentent de cerner sur un plan plus global le processus et les constituantes de cette forme de violence. Dans un premier temps, une revue des définitions de la violence psychologique tirées de recherches antérieures est présentée. Après un exposé des principaux aspects méthodologiques, une analyse des entrevues réalisées est articulée autour des trois constituantes d'une représentation sociale, en situant pour chacune d'elles les dispositions particulières caractérisant les répondantes et les répondants. À partir du matériel recueilli, une définition de la violence psychologique est ensuite proposée et l'article conclut en précisant l'éclaircissement conceptuel que permet cette définition.
