Abstract
Introduction: Between June 17, 2003 and November 3, 2004 the BMT ward experienced a clonal MBL-Psa outbreak involving 28 patients, 16 of whom developed infection (bacteremia = 12, pneumonia = 2, UTI = 1, CVC access site = 1) and 12 patients developed asymptomatic rectal colonization. Colonization was observed both before and after infection. Patients included allogeneic BMT (14), autologous BMT (8), and haematology/other oncology (6). The outbreak began immediately after a 3 month waterborne outbreak involving the same strain in the main ICU, which was arrested by eliminating faucet aerator contamination in 4 automatic handwashing sinks.
