Abstract
Una de las tensiones sociales principales de estos tiempos está entre la demanda del capital privado y de los gobiernos nacionales por lograr el llamado crecimiento económico y la globalización con las demandas de las comunidades locales por la seguridad y la subsistencia. En Costa Rica, la tierra está pasando por una intensa transformación debido a la agenda del desarrollo sustentable que promete resolver dos crisis, la crisis de la deuda y la crisis del medio ambiente, mediante el crecimiento económico. Desde 1991, cuando se implementó el desarrollo sustentable en el Área de Conservación Arenal y sus alrededores (una de las 11 áreas de conservación en las que Costa Rica ha sido dividida), una avalancha de compañías mineras canadienses interesadas en la explotación de minas de oro a cielo abierto alarmó a las mujeres y los hombres de las comunidades locales, porque las operaciones mineras se habían extendido a áreas en las que nunca antes se había explotado la minería. Este artículo, ilustra la batalla de las mujeres por el agua limpia y la subsistencia, y su resistencia a la minería de oro canadiense, como parte de la agenda del desarrollo sustentable/globalización.
