Résumé La mondialisation des marchés et la concurrence accrue au niveau international incitent les entreprises à se concentrer de plus en plus sur les domaines de compétences où elles excellent et, par conséquent, à confier à des tiers les activités qu’elles maîtrisent moins bien. C’est dans ce contexte que sont apparus les prestataires de services logistiques, mieux connus sous l’appellation third party logistics providers ou 3PL. Ces entreprises prennent en charge une partie ou l’ensemble des activités logistiques de leurs clients. L’impartition des services logistiques à des 3PL est devenue un phénomène mondial qui n’a rien d’une mode. Cet article dresse un portrait de cette nouvelle industrie et en relate l’évolution récente. Il explique les motifs invoqués par les entreprises pour avoir recours à ces services, précise les activités confiées aux 3PL et commente les résultats obtenus à la suite de l’impartition de telles activités. Pour mieux comprendre le rôle des prestataires de services logistiques, l’article aborde le concept de centres de distribution à valeur ajoutée dont la gestion est la plupart du temps confiée à des 3PL. Des exemples illustrent ce concept.
