This paper presents an overview of structural-health-monitoring technologies for constructed structures, based on six field demonstration projects in Canada. The principle of fibre-optic sensors is discussed, including the fibre Bragg grating, Fabry–Perot and long-gauge sensors together with their positive and negative aspects. Site applications of these technologies include a cable-stayed pedestrian bridge, prestressed concrete girder bridges, structural beams in a cemetery, a hollow bronze sculpture and substructures of a steel-plate girder bridge.
