Abstract
Afin de maintenir la spécificité linguistique du Québec, le gouvernement québécois encourage l’établissement d’immigrants indépendants francophones sur son territoire. Cependant, le Québec accueille aussi des immigrants allophones pour qui la méconnaissance du français constitue un obstacle à l’intégration et à la participation à cette société d’accueil. Afin d’atténuer cette barrière linguistique, les nouveaux arrivants allophones peuvent recourir aux services d’un interprète. Mais ce dernier, qui évolue en milieu social, ne fait-il que de la traduction ? En comparant la pratique de deux interprètes exerçant à Québec, nous pourrons constater que l’interprète peut être également un médiateur interculturel qui facilite l’établissement de liens entre les immigrants allophones et les membres de la société d’accueil, voire qui favorise l’intégration et la participation de ces personnes à la société québécoise.
