Après avoir montré l’évolution de la formation professionnelle au secondaire au Québec, cet article décrit l’accès à la carrière enseignante dans ce secteur d’étude. Les enseignants de cette filière vivent une inévitable situation de transition entre leur métier, où ils étaient souvent des experts, et le métier d’enseignant, pour lequel ils n’ont pas eu de formation, mais qu’ils doivent tout de même pratiquer au quotidien. Les données d’une enquête menée auprès de 152 enseignants permettent de décrire l’entrée dans la carrière enseignante, la place de l’enseignement dans leur trajectoire professionnelle, les débuts dans l’enseignement et leur avenir dans ce domaine. Les résultats montrent que le passage du métier à l’enseignement est un phénomène complexe, enchevêtrement de choix individuels et de possibilités objectives, permettant la bifurcation de la trajectoire professionnelle.
