Résumé La recherche appliquée portant sur la logistique des distributeurs insiste sur l’importance du service à la clientèle en vue d’acquérir un avantage concurrentiel durable. Cet article s’interroge sur la validité de ce raisonnement, sous-entendant une évolution inéluctable des entreprises vers l’excellence logistique. Il indique que lorsque de nouveaux formats de vente entrent sur le marché, ils choisissent quasi systématiquement de poursuivre une stratégie de domination par les coûts, avec des coûts logistiques les plus bas possible, au détriment du service. Petit à petit, afin d’élargir la clientèle, le format de vente améliore le service, même si ses coûts logistiques augmentent. Il est alors menacé par un nouvel entrant qui adopte à son tour une stratégie de domination par les coûts. Ce modèle, connu sous le nom de «roue de la distribution», considère que tous les distributeurs en phase de maturité cherchent à améliorer leur niveau de service logistique, quitte à réduire leur compétitivité sur les prix, ce qui menace leur pérennité. L’article remet en question cette vision en soulignant l’émergence d’une stratégie paradoxale chez des distributeurs établis de longue date : une dégradation volontaire du service logistique pour améliorer leur rentabilité. En prenant l’exemple français, il en appelle à une réflexion sur ce que seront les «pratiques logistiques gagnantes» de demain dans l’industrie du commerce de détail alimentaire.
