Abstract
Rappelant la nouveauté de l'intérêt manifesté au Québec pour les questions de santé au travail, l'auteur souligne l'importance de ne pas limiter les recherches à l'analyse de la seule toxicité des matières industrielles produites, alors qu'on peut soupçonner l'ensemble des conditions de travail d'avoir aussi des effets nocifs pour la santé des travailleurs. Ainsi, les résultats d'une recherche réalisée auprès d'un groupe d'ouvriers astreints au travail par équipe dans une usine de textiles, indiquent que ces derniers sont beaucoup plus affectés par des troubles du sommeil et de la digestion que leurs camarades travaillant régulièrement de jour. De même, l'horaire rotatif semble provoquer et accélérer la formation d'ulcères d'estomac pour une fraction importante des travailleurs qui y sont soumis. Enfin, compte tenu des problèmes de santé associés à de nombreuses autres conditions de travail, il apparaît peu probable d'atteindre à une véritable politique de santé au travail sans une transformation des structures économiques qui profitent de l'insalubrité.
