Parce que le rituel de l’exécution dans la France d’Ancien Régime a essentiellement été considéré sous le seul appareil des supplices capitaux, la perspective chrétienne de réconciliation spirituelle fut souvent privilégiée à celle, éminemment politique, d’expulsion et d’élimination sociale du condamné. En s’inscrivant sous la perspective des enjeux politiques de l’usage des corps, cette recherche tend ainsi à présenter les mouvements de tous les acteurs du rituel – condamné, exécuteur et confesseur – comme les éléments fondamentaux d’un mécanisme de légitimation du spectacle judiciaire où le corps et les gestes confirmaient, en suivant un code inamovible et extrêmement précis, la culpabilité du patient. L’auteur entend ainsi démontrer que le pouvoir orchestrait dans une liturgie politique du corps à corps un rituel d’exclusion du condamné pour légitimer les manifestations de la justice royale par l’association répétée entre le crime et le criminel.
