Abstract
La syncope est une perte de connaissance subite et généralement momentanée qui peut avoir de graves effets indésirables. Les effets d'une syncope peuvent varier entre une chute et un accident fatal. La syncope nuit énormément à la qualité de vie liée à la santé du patient. Son fardeau sur le système de santé est considérable. Il n'y a pas de voie diagnostique claire pour en déterminer la cause. Ainsi, les patients peuvent être hospitalisés et subir des tests diagnostiques coûteux, souvent répétés et non concluants. Les moniteurs cardiaques implantables existent depuis plus d'une décennie pour contribuer au diagnostic précoce des cas inexpliqués de syncope. Cependant, même s'il s'agit d'une invention canadienne, leur utilisation est sous-optimale dans le système de santé canadien. La présente étude donne un aperçu de la syncope et de sa prise en charge, ainsi que des économies potentielles par diagnostic si le moniteur cardiaque implantable était utilisé systématiquement en Ontario.
