Depuis 150 ans, de multiples interventions humaines (dragage, dépôts de dragage, ouvrages de régularisation et de contrôle des glaces, etc.) ont transformé la topographie du lac Saint-Pierre. Bien qu’il soit certainement significatif, l’impact de ces travaux sur la physique (niveau d’eau, courant) et sur le vivant (faune, flore) est encore inconnu. La distribution spatiale et temporelle des travaux effectués au lac Saint-Pierre depuis 1844 a été reconstituée à partir de nombreux documents d’archives. La position des dragages successifs et des zones de dépôts associées est présentée en détails sur un support SIG (Système d’Information Géographique). La numérisation de données topographiques anciennes et la connaissance des zones modifiées ont permis de reconstituer la forme du lac Saint-Pierre telle qu’elle était durant la période préindustrielle ainsi que son évolution jusqu’à aujourd’hui. La compréhension de l’évolution du lac Saint-Pierre et du fleuve Saint-Laurent, constitue une étape essentielle qui permettra de séparer les changements « naturels » des facteurs confondants que sont les interventions humaines. Ceci rendra possible l’établissement de modèles prédictifs fiables qui permettront entre autres d’évaluer les impacts potentiels des changements climatiques sur l’écosystème du fleuve Saint-Laurent.
