Abstract
Cet article interroge le travail de l’identité et de l’altérité dans le cadre du marché de la consommation ethnique en France, du point de vue des interactions marchandes. Il se fonde sur une enquête de terrain de longue durée menée dans la région Poitou-Charentes auprès de migrants originaires d’Afrique subsaharienne. L’objectif de cet article suit deux axes : le premier rappelle l’urgence de rompre avec toute définition essentialiste de l’ethnicité. Le second interroge la manière dont les commerçants africains travaillent avec nos images de l’altérité et réinterprètent des signifiants culturels en fonction de la définition de la situation dans laquelle ils se trouvent et des relations sociales en cours. À partir d’une analyse comparée entre trois aires situationnelles (marchés forains, africains, de festivals), nous chercherons à éclairer la variation des stratégies identitaires, en prenant en compte leurs enjeux et leurs contraintes.
