Abstract
Culture (Camera) Commerce: The Gift Shop exhibition at the Winnipeg Art Gallery explores the motivation, context and installation strategies that informed the presentation of an exhibition produced by the essay's author for the Winnipeg Art Gallery in the fall of 2000. This exhibition and the essay explore the significance of an unquestioned application by the gallery's photo studio staff of virtually the same photographic technique to the documentation of a range of subjects, from gift shop products to cultural artifacts in the gallery's collections. Also discussed in the essay are some precedents and social contexts for such an approach to institutional photographic documentation as well as the increasingly prominent place of commerce in publicly sponsored galleries and museums.
