Abstract
This article sets out examples of obstacles to employment revealed in two studies that followed the settlement process of immigrants and asylum seekers in Québec. The first of these is a ten-year longitudinal study of the settlement of new immigrants who arrived in Québec in 1989. The second is a retrospective study of the settlement of asylum seekers who filed their application in 1994 and whose situation was regularized by March 1997. Based on already published analyses, the author examines the impact of acquiring refugee status, the impact of language skills, the difficulties in finding a job that is at the same level as that held before migrating, differentiations based on national origins and, lastly, the impact of the composition of social networks.
