Abstract
Les racines historiques d’Haïti sont profondément empreintes de la violence des systèmes coloniaux espagnol et français depuis la découverte de l’Île en 1492 jusqu’à l’indépendance des anciens esclaves en 1804. Cette période est marquée par l’émergence d’une médecine créole haïtienne qui a pu répondre aux besoins des esclaves face aux problématiques que nous appelons aujourd’hui la santé mentale. À l’arrivée de la médecine occidentale et de la psychiatrie en Haïti, l’ethnopsychiatrie haïtienne prit naissance des rapports de luttes hégémoniques culturelles reliées à l’occupation américaine de 1915 à 1934. En effet, les médecins haïtiens formés à la médecine occidentale ont ajouté aux pathologies classiques des explications anthropologiques ; par la suite, d’autres études anthropologiques et cliniques sur la famille haïtienne ont contribué à l’avancement de l’ethnopsychiatrie haïtienne. Les pratiques cliniques contemporaines auprès des communautés haïtiennes vivant à Montréal permettent de retrouver les fondements de l’ethnopsychiatrie haïtienne dans des modèles d’intervention de la médecine créole haïtienne, dans le mysticisme haïtien, dans des croyances religieuses qui constituent une façon particulière d’appréhender le monde.
