Abstract
Intitulé Mes Tablettes, le journal intime de Romuald Trudeau s’étend sur plus d’un millier de pages et s’avère une source fort riche pour l’étude des sensibilités. Dans cette optique, cet article aborde la perception du diariste vis-à-vis de l’Eglise catholique. Éduqué chez les sulpiciens, Trudeau est un catholique fervent, intéressé par les débats ecclésiastiques, mais passionné aussi par la politique. Dans les années 1830, il éprouve quelques difficultés à harmoniser cette double allégeance. Cependant, après l’échec des Patriotes, il conjugue aisément la religion et la politique et ses propres intérêts d’homme d’affaires. Son nationalisme fait alors une place centrale à l’Église catholique. Trudeau notait ce qu’il lisait, voyait ou entendait dans sa boutique d’apothicaire à Montréal et son témoignage éclaire la société de son époque.
