Le champ de l'adaptation scolaire représente l'un des enjeux fondamentaux de l'école moderne issue de la démocratisation scolaire. Selon une perspective sociohistorique, l'objectif est ici d'identifier et de comprendre les facteurs sociaux et scolaires qui participent à l'émergence de ce secteur d'enseignement en tenant compte des interactions complexes entre l'évolution de l'organisation scolaire, les groupes d'acteurs sociaux engagés dans la structuration de ce champ et les savoirs grâce auxquels sont classés, désignés et traités les élèves inadaptés. Espace institutionnel nouveau fondé à la base sur une logique d'intégration de tous les enfants dans l'école, le champ de l'adaptation scolaire constitue simultanément un lieu d'exclusion de certains élèves.
