L’entre-deux langues de l’auto-traduction, chez Nancy Huston, vient subvertir les rapports hiérarchiques entre l’original et la traduction, ou l’opposition entre langue maternelle et langue étrangère, nous invitant à nous interroger sur nos pratiques et nos représentations de la traduction ou de l’écriture. Nous cherchons ainsi à comprendre dans quelle mesure l’écriture entre le français et l’anglais de Nancy Huston remet en question non seulement les catégories traditionnelles de la traduction, mais également le genre comme construction sociale. L’histoire de la traduction est traversée par des métaphores sexistes ou de nature sexuelle, telles que « les belles infidèles », reflétant le rôle inférieur de la traduction associé au féminin, par rapport à l’original identifié au masculin. Aussi la question de l’infidélité, illustrée par l’adage traduttore traditore, se trouve-t-elle être réfutée par Nancy Huston, à la fois dans sa pratique de l’auto-traduction et dans un texte intitulé « Traduttore non è traditore », publié dans le recueil collectif Pour une littérature-monde. Elle revient, dans ses écrits, sur le thème de la maternité et la dichotomie homme-esprit/femme-corps. On retrouve une certaine anxiété tenant au rapport à la langue maternelle et au corps dans sa fiction, de même qu’une interrogation portant sur le masque et les identités multiples. L’exil, ce « sentiment d’être dedans/dehors », pour Nancy Huston, ouvre sur la question de l’identité personnelle et des identités multiples (linguistique, sexuelle, nationale ou politique), si bien que l’identité des auteurs et des traducteurs peut également s’entremêler et se confondre. En quête de sens, auteurs et lecteurs se trouvent engagés dans un travail infini de traduction, de sorte que c’est toute l’expérience humaine qui s’inscrirait dans les termes d’un paradigme de la traduction.
