Abstract
Les gouaches découpées de Lesueur constituent l’un des fleurons des riches collections révolutionnaires du musée Carnavalet. Souvent reproduites, elles n’avaient encore pas fait l’objet d’une publication. Cette série unique propose pourtant une approche très particulière de la période allant de 1789 à 1806, en une sorte de journal en images dont l’ampleur laisse supposer une fonction publique, sans doute théâtrale. Ces petits tableaux reflètent les sentiments – tantôt enthousiastes tantôt réprobateurs – de la petite bourgeoisie parisienne en Révolution, avec une vivacité, une justesse d’observation, un sens de la couleur et de la mise en page qui confèrent une grande saveur à ce témoignage exceptionnel.
