Abstract
Cet article est la première étude historique qui porte sur le processus menant à la multiplication des centres de recherche universitaires en sciences sociales et humaines au Canada. Nos résultats, étayés principalement par des données quantitatives, montrent que la généralisation des équipes de recherche relève autant de facteurs internes à l’université — l’établissement de centres est une stratégie permettant à des « chercheurs-entrepreneurs » de générer des fonds de recherche et aux dirigeants universitaires de développer leur institution — que de facteurs externes — le financement d’unités de recherche permet à des commanditaires d’acquérir des connaissances sur des problèmes qui ont leur source à l’extérieur du milieu académique et qui ne cadrent pas avec les frontières d’une seule discipline. L’objectif de cette étude est de contribuer à la réflexion actuelle sur les « modes de production » et les finalités de la recherche universitaire en sciences de l’homme et du social.
