Les transformations récentes du secteur de la défense font émerger une question centrale, celle de sa dynamique d’innovation. L’implication croissante des PME-PMI innovantes aux côtés des grands maîtres d’œuvre nous amène à nous intéresser aux relations de sous-traitance mises en œuvre et à leur impact sur le contenu innovant des programmes d’armement. Notre postulat de départ est que les modèles d’innovation distribuée représentent une solution théorique aux contraintes et difficultés des organisations industrielles. Or, notre étude terrain auprès de PME-PMI innovantes en lien avec la défense montre que les pratiques actuelles évoluent en fait vers des modèles coopératifs cloisonnés, au détriment du potentiel innovant du tissu industriel. Nous apportons alors quelques explications quant à cette situation et proposons des pistes de recherche exploratoire pour mieux comprendre la dynamique d’innovation et l’évolution du secteur de la défense.
