Abstract
L’espace n’est pas absent des préoccupations des historiens français mais il n’y a pas en France une école de géographie historique aussi importante qu’au Québec. Le présent article vise à analyser les multiples prises en compte de la notion d’espace par les historiens français et à en expliquer les caractères spécifiques. Trois points seront successivement abordés dans cet article : le rappel de travaux anciens permettra de montrer que la question de l’espace est loin d’avoir été négligée en France par les historiens ; par contre, en France, les historiens ont peu conceptualisé la notion d’espace ; cependant, au cours des dix dernières années, les notions de paysage et d’environnement sont devenues très importantes pour les historiens, surtout pour ceux des périodes anciennes.
