Le présent article vise à faire le point sur les conclusions des principales enquêtes qui se sont penchées sur la crise d’octobre 1970 au cours de laquelle le ministre québécois du travail, Pierre Laporte, a été trouvé mort dans le coffre d’une automobile abandonnée par ses ravisseurs du Front de libération du Québec (FLQ), et James Richard Cross, un attaché commercial britannique, enlevé par une autre cellule du FLQ, a été retrouvé sain et sauf par la police. De toutes les enquêtes qui se sont préoccupées de façon directe ou indirecte des événements d’octobre, seuls les travaux de Me Jean-François Duchaîne, explicitement mandaté par le gouvernement du Québec pour conduire des investigations sur la Crise d’octobre et ceux de la Commission Keable sur des opérations policières sont jugés suffisamment pertinents pour être présentés et discutés dans cet article. Les évènements, tel qu’ils ont été rapportés par chacune des deux enquêtes, sont présentés et discutés d’abord en ce qui concerne le rapport Duchaîne, puis en ce qui a trait à la Commission Keable. Enfin, la question de savoir si la Crise d’octobre avait été contrôlée politiquement ou policièrement est abordée et argumentée à la lumière des informations révélées par les enquêtes effectuées et à l’aune de l’expérience de l’auteur.
