In this paper, a new method is described for generalizing lines that makes use of a geometric transformation and the Douglas-Peucker method for selection and elimination of the primary line points. The selected points are assembled into segments. In each segment, the points are analysed to determine whether they should be eliminated or whether a new point should be inserted. In the segments where a new point is generated, it is possible to optimize the length or area of the line after generalization. The process terminates when the generalized line maintains the required accuracy.
