Abstract Die herkömmliche Aufbereitung des im Tagebau geförderten kanadischen Ölsands bedarf hohen energetischen Aufwands und birgt große ökologische Probleme. Daher wurde ein alternatives Aufbereitungsverfahren entwickelt, das die Folgekosten und Umweltrisiken umgeht. Das im Ölsand enthaltene Bitumen wird durch organische Lösungsmittel herausgelöst. Mithilfe einer durch einen Waschschritt erweiterten Dampf‐Druckfiltration werden die gelösten und festen Bestandteile voneinander getrennt. Damit wurde das Ziel erreicht, eine möglichst hohe Bitumenausbeute sowie einen deponierbaren Sand zu erhalten.
